First Year Experience
Beginning with the week of Orientation, the Divinity School offers special programming for first
year students to support the transition to graduate study at Vanderbilt. These workshops are
designed to integrate critical academic, spiritual, and personal disciplines in light of the school’s
purposes and commitments, and to promote holistic well-being for all students.
All first-year workshops are required unless otherwise noted. Please reserve the dates listed in
red on your fall calendar:
Monday, August 24 (all-day)
Theological Writing Workshop (9am-12pm)
Facilitated by Victor Judge, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs,
and Luis Menendez, 2015-16 Divinity Writing Tutor
Forming Communities (1-4pm)
Facilitated by Amy E. Steele, Assistant Dean for Student Life
Monday Formations: Exploring Spiritual Practices (optional for MTS students)
Students will be invited to choose from one of four possible “tracks” exploring a particular spiritual practice.
Each track will meet for three consecutive weeks.
Monday, September 14 – 10:10-11am
Monday, September 21 – 10:10-11am
Monday, September 28 – 10:10-11am
Monday Formations: Stewarding Your Gifts (required for all first-year students)
Students will explore the intersection of vocation and finances, with particular attention to
thinking theologically about personal practices. Facilitated by Lillian Hallstrand, Director of
Stewardship and Vocational Planning.
