Dave Perkins

Associate Director, Religion in the Arts and Contemporary Culture

Dr. Dave Perkins comes to the Religion in the Arts and Contemporary Culture Program with a 25-year tenure in the music industry where he worked as a guitarist, songwriter, recording artist, and producer.  In that time, Dave established recording and performance ties with a number of iconic American music makers.  Dave studied at Vanderbilt’s Divinity School (M.Div.) and at Vanderbilt University (Ph.D.).  He teaches courses in the religion and arts curriculum and has special interests in aesthetics, culture theory, ethnomusicology, popular religion, and the theology of song.  Forthcoming from Dave are chapters in Spirit of Praise: Music and Worship in Global Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity (Penn State Press) and Faith, Hope, Love: The Theology of the Beach Boys (Wipf and Stock/Cascade Books).  Dave remains a practicing artist.  In 2012, Dave composed and recorded the soundtrack for the feature film Deadline.  His 2009 album Pistol City Holiness (Lugnut Records) was widely praised by music critics and described as “ . . . a blues-rock masterpiece.”
