Current points of emphasis

POIESIS exists to provide space for student creativity.  POIESIS seeks to allow students the opportunity for artistic growth, expression, and incorporation within their degree program at VDS.

We focus on holding Arts and Conversation gatherings for creating and enjoying artistic expressions as well as engaging in theological dialogue regarding artistic expressions. We define art broadly and believe that all created beings have a creative spark. Considering yourself an artist is not required to join this organization.

Our second point of emphasis this year is to build bridges with other student organizations at Vanderbilt Divinity School, Vanderbilt University, and other communities in Nashville for partnering in social justice issues through the use of art.

Lis ValleMy name is Lis Valle-Ruiz. I am a third year Ph.D. student in the Homiletics and Liturgics program researching the intersections of preaching, liturgy, performance, and gender studies. I believe that in community we can share the power of performing arts for healing, equality, and liberation. I am an actress and preacher serving faith communities to use performing arts to worship and proclaim. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and I have been hovering over theological institutions of higher learning in the continental United States since 2008. I currently live in Nashville while pursuing studies at the Graduate Department of Religion of Vanderbilt University. Enjoy my work at  Email

Sara GreenMy name is Sara Green; I'm a second year M.Div student hailing from New Orleans. I did my undergraduate work in dance at Bennington College. I'm learning about the information that our bodies have to offer to us about God through movement improvisation. I work rigorously at the intersections of race, sexuality, class and gender to be a storyteller and visionary arts scholar. In my practice, I want to explore sculpture, textiles and burlesque. In the daytime, I'm organizing in public housing and programming in student affairs. Look at some of my art at .
