First Year Experience
Beginning with the week of Orientation, the Divinity School offers special programming for first year students to support the transition to graduate study at Vanderbilt. These workshops are designed to integrate critical academic, spiritual, and personal disciplines in light of the school’s purposes and commitments, and to promote holistic well-being for all students.
All first-year workshops are required unless otherwise noted. Please reserve the dates on your fall calendar. Make-up day is November 18, 9am-12pm (Stewardship/Vocation) and/or 1-4pm (Spiritual Disciplines). You must attend the entire makeup session for any one absence in either session. Questions? Contact Amy Steele.
Monday Formations: Exploring Spiritual Disciplines (available to all MDiv students; optional for MTS students)
Students will be invited to choose from possible “tracks” exploring a particular spiritual practice (Embodied Prayer with Trudy H. Stringer, Contemplative Writing as a Spiritual Discipline with Carlin E. Rushing, or Lectio Divina with Amy E. Steele).
Each track will meet for three consecutive weeks. All sessions are held on Mondays, 10:10-11am
Monday Formations: Stewarding Your Gifts, Naming Your Vocation (required for ALL first-year students)
Students will explore the intersection of vocation and finances, with particular attention to thinking theologically about personal practices. Facilitated by Lillian Lammers, Director of Stewardship and Vocational Planning.
All sessions are held on Mondays, 10:10-11am
