Methodist Studies at Vanderbilt
In 1985, the Divinity School initiated a program of United Methodist Studies, designed to provide opportunities for United Methodist students to learn more about the life and traditions of their denomination. The program offers students opportunities for fellowship, for investigation of recent developments in church life through visiting speakers, and for study of the history and theology of United Methodism through general and specialized courses.
Nashville is an important center for United Methodist boards and agencies; here, experts converge from all across the church. These persons, who have acquired knowledge and insight vital to effective Christian ministry, are used for leadership roles in this program.

Ordination Requirements
If you believe God is calling you to serve the church and the world through ministry as an elder, you must begin the Candidacy process, which is required for all licensed and ordained clergy in The United Methodist Church.

Turner Barnett Scholarship
The Turner-Barnett Program for Pastoral Formation provides mentorship, scholarships and congregational connections that will fuel real-world impact in the changing field of congregational ministry. The Turner-Barnett Program will welcome its first students in the 2026–27 academic year.
Methodist Student Association
The Methodist Student Association gathers monthly, inviting United Methodist-affiliated faculty, staff and the broader Vanderbilt Divinity Community to join the conversations as they have led conversations about current issues impacting The United Methodist Church, as well as hosting social, vocational, and spiritual gatherings.
Vanderbilt Divinity School offered a robust classical theological education to prepare me for life and ministry. The Turner Program’s focus on a church internship and intentional time with an ordained United Methodist clergy person paired with my theological education helped me connect theoretical concepts with practical experience.
