Application Process Overview

  • How to Apply

All VDS applications are completed online through our website.

If you are interested in a dual degree program, you will apply to each of the programs individually.

  • Eligibility

Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) Applicants

    • Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university. We strongly recommend an average GPA of 2.9 or higher. If you do not hold an undergraduate degree or have a degree from an unaccredited institution but otherwise show experience and promise for graduate theological education, you may still be eligible. Please contact the Office of Admissions.
    • Students with prior first theological degrees are not considered for admission to the M.T.S. or M.Div. programs.
    • We do not expect that you previously studied religion or served in a ministerial capacity, and many of our students come from long careers in other fields.

    Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) Applicants

    • Applicants must hold a Master of Divinity, Master of Theological Studies, or equivalent first theological degree from an accredited institution of higher education, with an average GPA of 2.6 or higher.
    • Students are assumed to have endorsing religious bodies, and applicants functioning as clinical chaplains are assumed to have at least two units of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education). CPE is not required; students should be engaged in a structured counseling context to provide adequate opportunities for reflection during the practicum. Learn more here.

    Transfer Students

    • Transfer students are eligible to apply for admission to the M.T.S. and M.Div. degree programs.
    • Prospective transfer students should complete the regular degree application, as well as submit a letter stating the reasons for transferring and provide a letter of good standing from the president or dean of the theological school from which transfer is being made.
    • The number of hours transferred may not exceed 12 for M.T.S. or 24 for M.Div.
  • Application Deadlines

Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.)

    • January 15th is the priority deadline for consideration for full-tuition scholarships.
    • April 1st is the regular deadline for fall admissions, but applications may be accepted and considered on a rolling basis until June 1st.

    Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.)

    • March 15th is the priority deadline.
    • May 1st is the deadline for MHICS Department of Defense applicants and the general deadline for all other applications.

    International Applicants:

    • December 1st is the priority deadline.
    • Applications from international applicants received after December 1st will be considered on a rolling basis.
  • Application Fees

There is no fee to complete an application.

Application Requirements for Degree Programs

  • Official Transcripts

Submit all transcripts to Vanderbilt’s Center for Data Management.

    • Some institutions provide secure electronic delivery of transcripts. These submissions may be made to cdm@vanderbilt.edu.
    • Transcripts sent via the postal service should be addressed as follows:
      • CDM
        PMB 407833
        2301 Vanderbilt Place
        Nashville, TN 37240-7833
        United States of America

Transcripts must be sent from the institution; we cannot accept transcripts sent by students.

  • Letters of Recommendation

How many recommendation letters are required?

    • The Master of Divinity (M.Div.) and Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) programs require 3 letters of recommendation for admission.
    • The Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) program requires 2 letters of recommendation.

Who should I choose as a recommender?

    • Applicants frequently ask professors, work supervisors, pastors, or other religious leaders to write a letter of recommendation.
    • The recommender does not have to work in a religious profession, but you should be looking for someone who can speak to your vocational passion and/or professional skills relevant to graduate-level education (writing, time management, critical thinking, etc.).
    • If you graduated from a prior degree program over seven years ago, or if you are unable to contact a professor you studied with, consider selecting as a recommender someone who can speak to your ability to learn and your research capacity.
  • Essay Questions

The goal of the application essay questions is for prospective students to tell their stories authentically and succinctly. Whether you come from a theological background or not, we want to know about the experiences and questions that have shaped your interest in theological education. We encourage prospective students to begin the essays as soon as possible, spend time thoughtfully editing their work, and share their essays with recommenders, advisors, or other willing editors.

  • Testing Requirements
    • GRE scores are not required.
    • TOEFL, IELTS, or DET test scores are required for international applicants.
      • Proficiency in written and oral English is required for enrollment in an academic program. This proof can be obtained by submitting scores from one of the following exams:
      • English Proficiency Test Waivers
        • You may qualify for an English proficiency test waiver if your previous academic program was completed with English as the language of instruction. To receive an English Test Waiver, you must have proof of one of the following:
          • An official or attested letter from the undergraduate college, university Registrar, or Controller of Examinations office outlining English as your medium of instruction
          • An unofficial transcript, attested mark sheet, or degree statement where English is stated as the medium of instruction
          • Your entire program was completed or will be completed in a qualifying country (United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada [except Quebec])
        • You can find these Test Waiver options on the Academic History page in your application. To request a waiver, select the statement that applies to you.

Other Ways to Study at Divinity

  • Dual Degree Programs

Dual-degree programs are available for both M.T.S. and M.Div. candidates in the following Professional Schools and areas:

    • Doctor of Jurisprudence program at Vanderbilt Law School
    • Doctor of Medicine program at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
    • Master of Science in the School of Nursing
    • Master of Business Administration at Owen Graduate School of Management
    • Master of Education (Community Development and Action) at Peabody College of Education and Human Development

Admission to dual-degree programs requires admission to both schools; financial aid will be awarded and administered by each school separately. The Divinity School (and in most cases the other school involved in the dual-degree program) will transfer academic work taken at the partner school into the M.T.S. or M.Div. curriculum, thus helping to reduce the time necessary to complete both degrees.
